Every week, the Write On team challenges you to create a brief story from a given prompt.

This week, our challenge is themed "Horn":

In 500 words, write a story in which a horn goes off.

Remember to add horn and weekend write in as story tags (otherwise your story will not appear among the results)!

Click here to write this story.

Click here to read the results.

The Weekend Write-In FAQ has answers to some of the most common questions about our writing challenge.

Check out past Write-In challenges in the Exercises and Writing Prompts forum.

Enjoy the prompt(s)? Want to see something different? Sound off below -- we're listening!

Three Horns Off

Cover creator only had a doe available in stock images, no bucks.

I am not an English speaker, so please forgive me for asking this: does "a horn goes off" usually mean "a car makes a noise?"

That depends on the type of horn. A car horn, yes. But I used this horn in my story (which is part of a serial) - http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/lotr/images/4/4f/BoromirHorn.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20070419194711

A horn can be a car horn, a musical instrument, the things you find on animals' heads of any number of things.

'Goes off' can be makes a noise, leaves, explodes or even turn putrid.

Take your pick.

I would say most people, upon hearing the phrase "a horn goes off", would imagine a car horn. Of course, there are other ways to interpret it, as many of us did in our stories this week.
