Dear friends,

While we have been proud over the last few years to have brought together such a vibrant, active, and creative community, unfortunately we will be closing Write On’s doors on March 22. After this date, access to Write On will be unavailable.

Your Amazon.com account will not be affected by the closure of Write On. If you don’t have any content you wish to save, no further action is required on your part.

If you do have content you wish to save, we encourage you to download your posted and drafted stories by March 22. Here’s how:
  1. Log in and visit your My Stuff page
  2. Click “Resume Writing” for the story you wish to save
  3. Click the “More Actions” menu on the top-right (directly below the “Post Update” button)
  4. Click “Download Story With Comments”
All story comments will be automatically appended to the end of the file downloaded. Please note that profile and forum comments are not included in this file. If you wish to save those, you will need to manually copy and paste the text into a file of your own.

Thank you for putting your work out there and for spending these years with us. It’s been a pleasure.

I'm sorry Write On is closing. It's a beautifully designed site, where I got helpful advice that improved my first two Time Rats novels (now published by Kindle Press). I'm sad I won't be able to put more than the first chapters of TR3 through the same process.

Thanks to all the staff, readers and other writers.

I know right I am sad too. I wonder where I can read these again. Few I befriended on FB and few books are now available on amazon but what about rest of the people and their books? where will readers find their books? I wonder if anybody on wattpad? I enjoy reading books here. They all are well written which inspires me to write better and improve on my own skills.

If anybody is on wattpad please follow me there - my username is TreasonGIrl. I hate to lose such good writers.
I am not happy it is shutting down.

I've loved being here and the people I've met.

I'm curious about the reason for closing the site, since it has such great participation and has greatly benefited so many of us?

Kinda wondered if this would happen sooner or later. :(

I guess I'll go back to posting stories on my blog… I'm sure most of my reads there are bots, but the numbers seem higher. http://farmanor.blogspot.com/

My biggest story here, Blink, will soon be available on KDP and (I hope not too much later) CreateSpace.

I totally hear you, Henry, and feel the same way. I had plans for posting my other stories here, and all that is now moot. Even though I had the vague fear at the back of my mind, I never imagined they'd close this site. It's too rich in works of so many different genres and styles.. and it costs them virtually nothing to run, compared to the vast resources Amazon has. I mean, it's an asset to the parent company, a place where new talent can grow and be discovered.. why kill it? Doesn't make sense. It's a very baffling and disappointing turn of events. I hope they reconsider.

I don't get it why they couldn't leave the platform still running and check if some of the members want to moderate the threads and works.

I'm so sorry to hear WriteOn is shutting down. 😩 I have met some of the most wonderful people here and developed special friendships. It's a great place to learn and get feedback. I'd like to say how very thankful I am for the opportunity to have been a part of such a great site. WO will always hold a special place in my heart since this is where I developed my first book and was in the process of drafting my second. Awesome job, guys!!!

Like the many other voices here, I am so sad to see this news!

I am also wondering why, and whether there is any way to save the site. For example, if the decision is being made due to the need for moderation, I'm certain you would have many volunteers among the people here to do so. If it's site upkeep and/or design, less likelihood but maybe worth asking?

If it's an Amazon corporate decision, is there a higher power we can petition to change their minds?

I'm truly at a loss at the moment, and just trying to absorb. I, like many, will be looking for alternate ideas or sites where we might continue to gain much needed feedback, advice and readership.

While I'm grateful and thankful for the opportunity to use this site, this news is crap, and it makes me angry.

The staff is all but silent for months, and then BAM! 'We're sorry but we've decided to close down the site.' How disappointing. I've made a home here. I've met good people here! Then you can't even supply an explanation as to why. Other than the fact the staff disappeared ages ago, the site works well. The people here have their ups and downs, but who doesn't? It was because of this site I was able to publish my first book.

This is a sad day, indeed! :-(

But why are you doing this? You haven't given us any rationale or reasonable explanation. My previous writing site, Authonomy, which also went belly-up, told us exactly why they were pulling the plug. This action of yours doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me. Upkeep of the site was minimal, hardly any new features have been added since ages. However, most were content with the way it was, because it's not the tech that makes the site, IT'S THE PEOPLE!

WriteOn has a unique, vibrant community which is rare to find on the Web. It's not something you can just replicate and graft onto another site, this ecosystem has taken years to mature... deep roots have been formed. You can't just pull the rug out from under us, and not even give us a reason! Hundreds, if not thousands will be affected by this decision and face an uncertain future, being uprooted from the one place they could feel at home and interact with fellow writers.

This is an appalling decision on your part, and I strongly urge you, on behalf of everyone here, to reconsider it in light of the great loss it would be to the writing community. It would be an injustice to all who cherish this site and who've made it into what it is - an invaluable, and inspirational literary resource. Please re-think it and consider everything that I, and others have said. If, despite this reasoned plea, you're still adamant to destroy something of great value, please give us an explanation as to why. You owe us that much, at least. Thank you.

So sad to hear this.

I've never been on any other writing site but Write On has really jump started my interest in writing. I never thought I'd be writing a story just about every week and certainly never thought I'd be posting stories for folks to actually read.

I've read so many great stories and met so many great people here.

I'll be sorry to see it go.

Well! Thank you for letting us all know 'Kindle Team'.
I am a bit surprised at this, it appears to be very short sighted by Kindle.
Almost as if you really do want to deliberately shoot yourselves in the foot.
I have enjoyed all the comments, prompts and activities on here, and have been warmly accepted and hugely supported by others.
If this is a monetary issue you have just let a marvellous asset go to waste.
All this Talent, Innovation, Creativity, Imagination and thoughtful Guidance will be lost in the ether.
Why don't you charge a small membership if that's the problem, ( I would be willing to pay it to keep this site) this is a lazy decision in my opinion.
Yes, I AM annoyed, VERY.
Such a Bloody Waste of something truly good and unique, it will never be this good again.
A HUGE thank you to ALL the other writers on here, for all the encouragement and help you have passed on to me.
You have ALL left me humbled by your talents.
Bless you and Good Luck.

ABNA died with no forewarning, not even an obit when it happened. WriteOn at least is getting a heads-up. That is certainly progress. It's hard to complain when a free service is withdrawn, but I must wonder why? Perhaps there is something on record from Opening Day, perhaps an originating post or a mission statement, saying what WriteOn was intended to achieve; then we could see if it will die as a success or a failure (from Amazon's point of view).

Well, thanks for the memories. Perhaps the last prompt will be "Wake"?

Write On! with or without Amazon's support, all it takes is pen and paper 8-(

Definitely with the Google Docs, Susan. I love that we can do that, and it appears I should soon have time freed up in the next couple months with the loss of reading materials here. But, I'm going to try to get as much read here that I can before it goes. Well, if people quit unposting their stuff. That's what gave me the first clue something was up. I logged on and all kinds of stories were unposted. :-( Sad.

(Sorry, if anything I write tonight doesn't seem to make any sense. I've broke out the wine in an attempt to keep my eyes dry until everyone in the house go to bed.) I'm so on the edge of tears. Ugh.

I broke down a bit earlier tonight when I first found out. Was fighting the tears and shaking. When had a private moment, let myself cry abit. Feel better now that have been reading everyone is going to try to stick together. Yeah, I will be saving everything and then posting to another site or sites that I /we can find. I'll update Wattpad which I haven't done in a year and a half. See if it's changed any. Didn't get anything from it before. Once things calm down, can definitely do Google Docs with you again.

Sad news.
I have to ask, is Amazon giving up entirely on encouraging new writers, or are they planning to support another type of forum?
There is already Kindle Scout, but that has been disappointing, providing little feedback.
Other writers, apparently smarter than we who still hang out here, have moved on and reported favorably on other sites. Hard to believe that Amazon doesn't have the resources to compete with those.

Hi Tori, I am on there, but haven't updated it in about a year and a half now. I TRIED using it. I signed up there the same time I signed up here. I kept both sites updated religiously. I participated in forums, I read and gave feedback to other authors, but in almost a year of that I only got 1 person to give me feedback and it was basically "nice story", and that was it. I did get reads, but not anywhere as many as here. I've gotten some fabulous feedback on WriteOn, and have met some truly awesome people. I'm so upset about this. I was shaking and crying earlier on. The people on this site have been so supportive. My writing has really improved since I've been getting feedback from other writers & readers on here. I look forward to reading others works and giving feedback as well to try help other fellow authors. This is such upsetting news. I'm calmer now that I've read that everyone is determined to keep the community together as much as possible and moving as a community to another site or sites. As long as we stick together it will be okay. So sad that we can't stay here, as I really like the set up of this site, though it could use some improvements, it does have a pretty nice set up.
Anyway, I will over the next few weeks update my work on Wattpad. My profile is the same: Susan K. Saltos

Yeah Wattpad definitely isn't a place for hard, solid feedback. It's certainly for a younger, less serious crowd. I've gotten good feedback there, but only because I've been digging in for years and even still it hasn't been a whole lot. There are some neat opportunities there, like the Wattpad Stars program, but it lacks in everything WO excelled at. I'll go search for you on there :)

I was sad to see this email today...

Authonomy's closing was rough... but those of us who migrated over survived. Now here we go again. I've had a lot of luck on both sites and met some wonderful people in the process. I'm sorry to see this one go, but I understand... Wondering what the next option will be?

Honestly to all the others that are heartbroken about this news, thanks so much for all the help on here. You're the reason that I'm finally reaching my goals and punishing my first book this Spring. This is a great group of people.

Anyone that want to stay in touch I'm here:
https://www.facebook.com/AmyMarieAuthor
OR Twitter is: @Amy_Writes_Book (clever... I know)
Or even Wordpress: https://amymarieauthor.wordpress.com

Bummer. Now how will I follow St. Elmo?

Good luck and God bless!

Hi all,

Seeing a lot of people asking the big "why?", so we'll reply to the main thread instead of to individual posts. Rest assured we’re reading everything here and in the other thread.

One of our goals is to constantly be innovating on behalf of readers and authors, so we’re always trying out new things. Write On is one such experiment, and, unfortunately, we were not able to grow it in the way that we had wished. It was a tough decision, but it's for that reason we have decided to stop offering the service.

We greatly admire and respect this community and the bonds you have forged. Even if Write On is no longer available to be your meeting space, we sincerely hope that you continue writing, reading, and helping each other.

Can you please clarify? In which way did you wish it to grow, that it didn't? What did you want to get from the site that you didn't? Was it something we the members did or didn't do? Or was it something about the way the site was run?

It's your site and your decision to make, of course, but still very disappointing.

ISN'T THERE ANY WAY YOU CAN KEEP THE SITE GOING?! Please! Can't you see just how many people really do care?! This place is better than Wattpad. You're Amazon! Please, there must be something you can do!

Thank you for responding, and for reading what we have to say.

I think you'll find that most people here are still in shock from the news. It's hard to understand how the decision can be made based on the fact that the site didn't grow in the way that was wished, when we as members saw very little support or response over the last several months. Very few new members noted finding the site due to advertising or promotion. In fact, in going to the Amazon site to try to find someone to petition to, I could not even find a reference to the WriteOn community. Kind of makes us wonder how Amazon expected to "grow."

In spite of all that, we are, as you noted, a close-knit community. We would all love the chance to keep the site going, even if that meant pulling in more users ourselves, or volunteering to support the site in some way.

Understanding the decision has been made, don't be surprised when we try to convince you to change it. :)
As those who are rallying for so many other things in this country right now will tell you, there is power in unity and in peaceful demonstration. There is power in the written word, and you have a whole community of writers here. If you can provide us with someone we might be able to petition, that would be wonderful. If not, please expect that we will take this to the public as a whole in an effort to achieve the same goal. Who knows. Maybe that would pull in the growth you're looking for. After all, any publicity is good publicity, right?

Again, thank you for your consideration. As a final request, please let the users here know that you have stopped updating the trending, looking for feedback and newly shared work threads, as some of us have already noticed. Not very pleasant for those holding on until March to find it out on their own.

With full sincerity,
Tracy

That's a bullshit answer. Amazon abandoned WriteOn over a year ago. You can't grow something that you invest zero dollars into. The real answer is that either you've acquired a competing platform, or you're tired of maintaining server space and staff for the writing site you abandoned a year ago. If you're going to give us a reason, at least make it plausible.

I've mentioned keeping the Home-Page, Profiles and WIPs and follow features. Discuss works there.

Lose the "Discuss" board. This should cut the bandwidth support a lot - tremendously I imagine.

These feature are the best I have seen so far. WO/Amazon has the best so to speak. ( I know you like to hear that ...)

I hate to see all your efforts go to waste. We also hate to see a wonderful site just disappear.

An experiment, really? Keep me posted and e-mail me for the next experiment. This one was good and still can be. I am a slave to Amazon. :) We all are.

You want to encourage readers to come and discuss WIPs I presume. Not to rant on a discuss forum. An alternative to end a project outside of a complete cutting of it -- is to cut the features that are causing you too much pain in the Reward/Pain ratio. Now the site organized in my above mentioned design might attract the readers and writers you had in mind.

I don't know. But that there may be other experiments planned is good. Keep me in mind. You know my e-mail. And this is also how I came here.

It has been fun. And I hope you have something in mind that is something similar to what I've mentioned.

It seems Kindle Scout can host something similar to what WO does. That makes since as I do see Kindle Scout changing - you have a lot of readers at Kindle Scout.

So maybe they open their doors slightly to allow the features I mentioned above. It would be a sub-section of Kindle Scout --- no discussion board. Maybe a button driven feed-back feature that new aspiring authors could use for reader's feedback and lose a discuss feature altogether. I don't know what your next experiment is or if you have one planned. But I think you do.

Who knows? Right?

Here is hoping.

Anybody interested in designing a closed (private) group on Facebook where we could all share stories and feedback? I know my hometown has a closed group with around 15,000 members (small town) that all post news and community information. We could do a similar thing with Authors to include blurbs, stories, tips and questions? I have no idea how to do it... Just throwing around an idea because I just looked at Wattpad, and the unknown confuses me!

I literally just joined this site within the last week and now you're closing? I can honestly see why though. It was hard as hell for me to even find this site. There's no advertising for the site to allow people to find it. Where's the twitter following. That's free advertising and there are absolutely no tweets from the Write On twitter account. This is the only descent writing site I've found other than Wattpad. It would be nice to have some options. Give me access to the Official Twitter account and if I can't drum up some business to help bring in new people, then go ahead and close down the site. What do you have to lose? I've slowed my activity on Twitter over the last year and I still have over 6,000 followers. How many new accounts would it take to keep the site from closing? Make a few of us admins. Those of us who know how to market. That's how Wattpad has continued to stay in business. They started an ambassador program to where a bunch of the people who started as writers, are now helping run the site. Give us limited access to help advertise and bring in more people. At this point, what do you really have to lose? At least let us try to help.

Man, I'm bummed! This is so sad! I feel like I've been orphaned. WriteOn had become a big, world-wide family to me, where not only had my writing improved by leaps and bounds, but I felt like I'd formed good friendships. I'm going to miss all you guys and gals. I'm hoping we can find another site where we can post and get meaningful feedback and enjoy each other's company. Meanwhile, I'll continue to post updates to my WIP as long as I can. And a big, heartfelt thank you to all who have helped me get this far.

This is a canned response, empty on any real information, but it's probably the best we're going to get.

I'm sad to see WO go. It was a helpful community and I got some real assistance here. I'm going to assume the reason for this closure is monetary in some way because that's usually the reason for any decision. At least where any corporate owned resource is concerned. The value of this site was that of a creative gathering place where ideas and craft could be discussed and improved upon. I'm guessing that was insufficient to justify its continued existence.

Yes, if you're running a business. When Amazon started Write On, they will have had a very clear idea of how they wanted it to develop, and what they wanted to see happening. The site must have failed to meet the targets set for it.

Amazon tries a lot of new things, and keeps the ones that work. That's one reason for their success.

Amazon's business is the sale of books and other retail items, not to profit off a message board. So far as this site missing its targets, without knowing what those targets were, we can only scratch our heads as to what this site failed to accomplish.

Amazon does a lot more than sell books and retail items. It's a very innovative company. There's Alexa, cloud computing services, Amazon publishing imprints, Kindle Scout and no doubt many more enterprises I haven't heard of. Amazon owns Kiva Robotics and Goodreads, and is experimenting with delivery drones. If you try lots of different things, some of them aren't going to work. You'll still be ahead of companies that stick to the same old thing.

I agree Lexi. So the hope is they keep those features that worked and try something new. That -- it looks like is our only hope.

I am wondering now if Kindle Scout will open its doors a little to allow for what I feel is good here at WO. If so, great. You will likely get an e-mail from Amazon when the next experiment is ready for Beta. I hope I do too.

But I don't know. I seriously doubt they just scrap everything. They have learned something. So they will use some of what WO is that worked like they wanted.

We are part of a herd ... this was an experiment ... so I see them keeping some of what happens here. They just need to close the doors and figure out the next experiment that ends closer to their target.

So keep writing! If you liked this, you might like what is coming better. I don't know that there is. But we have seen KS evolve and Kindle Worlds evolve. So WO has to go away and re-emerge as something else I imagine. It does not have to though.

I think now - WO is the best I have seen for doing the work I wanted to do and learn what I wanted to learn.

When I have had the best, I won't settle for seconds. So I am now Indie completely until whatever next new thing Amazon has coming -- comes out.

Jenni - I think that's a lovely idea. The thing is, we need to get the word out.
While it's true we may not be able to change the mind of Amazon corporate, we should put our collective hats on and shout this out to the world. If the only thing that happens is that someone who is accomplished supports us, or another site (like sweek) sees our dilemna and provides us with something similar, then that's a worthy goal. To that end, I did reach out to the successful author who first invited me here to WriteOn back in its Beta days, before it was made open to the public, in a hope that he'll join our efforts to spread the word. I don't know there's much more we can ask a single person to do on our behalf, but it's a start.

Let's go to twitter.

Let's go to facebook.

Let's go to the media and let them know what's going on!!!

For what it's worth, hubby and I are considering these very things. :)
He and I both work "day jobs" in IT, and have some equipment at home (like servers) that might be able to host this kind of site. It's too bad that with all the development already built by Amazon they don't just let us put it "in the cloud" and take over ourselves. That we could probably do pretty easily, and since they already offer free space, the only costs would be upkeep of server equipment and any future development, etc.

Strangely, hubby is also hoping to find a new job. Maybe I can convince him this would be a good career path. :-D

Hosting and moderation are the two key costs.
designing the site could also be a cost, but you could easily have a site that gradually improves over time, with input from volenteers.

Yes, this is what my hubby said also. There may be apps already available, but having something already designed would make it that much easier. The question is, would Amazon be willing to make it available to us? We could moderate and even upkeep the application, but need to have access to it somehow. Hopefully they will let us know.

Send an email to them asking if they'd be willing to open-source the write-on code. otherwise, most of the core functionality can be replicated with a wp template, for example. If anyone wants to go down the route of building a new version, doing so on github will allow anyone who knows what they are doing to contribute to the code, although you'll need at least one person to co-ordinate/project manage

Thanks, Mat. I've copied that info to my hubby for him to check out.
Any suggestions on who exactly I'd send that request to open-source the write-on code to? I don't know that just sending it to Amazon general contact would be good enough. I have a friend who used to work there, but he said that these fringe projects are one of several that "teams" will work on, so we'd have to get higher up on the food chain for a question like this I'd think. ???

I've looked a bit into writeon's code (the public facing html etc) and think Amazon are using proprietary code, so they couldn't open source even if they wanted.

I've started to write a wordpress theme in my spare time to copy much of writeon's functionality, but it will take time, and there is no guarentee that I will actually finish it (I don't have so much spare time). I did look around and found the following wp plug in https://en-gb.wordpress.org/plugins/writeshare/ which I notice from their website is what scribblers use. This would just need a wordpress installation, which would be fairly easy even for non-techy people to deal with. It could even be used as a short-term solution,

This is very sad news indeed. Yes, there are "other" writing sites, and many of us have used them to some level or another. But, none of them are like Write On is and now was. I am sure down the road we will see each other on different sites, until then Good Luck with your writings.

Although I haven't had time to write in the past year or so, I did start two stories and really enjoyed having input from other writers. I'm sorry to see this go. Perhaps this will motivate someone else to take up the banner and start a similar site. One never knows.....

Thank you to everyone who helped me, gave input and encouragement. This was a great concept and I enjoyed myself immensely. Happy writing everyone!

Best of luck to everyone involved. Hope you land on your feet in a new project, you've earned it.

Far from considering myself a successful author, but I've signed three book deals last year and I have to thanks the WriteOn community for helping me to harness the courage to start writing in English.

I'm very sure that it would have taken me more time and effort to reach that point on my own.

We repeat a lot that "writing is a solitary craft", but this kind of writing communities is an incredible way for us to develop our writing technique and to receive invaluable feedback that we'd hardly find somewhere else.

So please give a chance to keep this space alive!

One answer might be Gag Order Trickle Down. A mandate given by a certain person to all of his corporate friends, advising them to eliminate any source which might produce reading material he disagrees with. Not that we do, just that he fears we might.

Sadly I have downloaded and unposted all of my stories. And the time has come to sign out for the last time.
Hopefully WO will get a 12th hour reprieve from the Governor, in this case, Amazon. Although I believe waiting

By closing down, what message do you send to writers who have spent a lifetime writing their souls out? You're telling them to quit, just like your site did?
Before you close down, think of the hundreds more friendships that could have been formed here, the hundreds of writers that could have improved their work and truly shone and the thousands of writers who kept writing, even when times were tough, even when other people told them they couldn't.

The writers on this site kept writing, even when the odds were against them. They wrote with beauty in their soul and strength in their heart. They wrote, because even if one person found inspiration in their work, their many years of writing would be worth it.

Out of respect for the writers on this wonderful site, you should not close down. It's mutual respect. And writers deserve the most respect of all.

Thank you for the times, Write On. I can certainly say that this site made me believe in the sheer beauty of humanity, because the community here is nothing short of stunning and in times like this where our countries are closing off to each other, friendship couldn't be more important.

Connections and friendships of the most beautiful and intimate kind were sparked here. I find it utterly endearing that so many writers found friendship here, friendships that could last more than a lifetime. Isn't that what you always wanted? Just think of the many writers here who formed such beautiful friendships with readers and fellow writers, who learned to improve their work.

Before you close down, think once more.

We, writers, never quit.

You shouldn't either.

I am not a writer. I am a reader. I have been with write on since I got an invitation in my gmail to try out a new site. I am one to try anything once if I like it I come back. Well I came back I have seen Lexi through both of her time rats . MD White blow away aliens in his first of the series he working on, Rachel and her wondrous Kingdom, then there was the Child of Prophecy , SPRITE oh how I loved that book. Finder I went through both versions with Jenni Clarke.
I have been here for a long time and I feel like this is part of my family. I have spent the day fighting tears knowing that you are taking it away from us.
I will never know how the Cinnamon Hill twins turn out DJ has worked so hard on that. Is there any way for this site to stay open. I have been to Watt pad I don't care for it, it does not feel right. Write on is the place for young and old to practice and learn the gift of writing. How can you take the place that saw me through the worst days of my life. Gave me a purpose so I would not dwell on loosing my brother and niece. These wonderful people are so generous in spirit they ask after my son who was in an accident last year. This place is like An electronic version of Rachel's Kingdom bringing all of the good things to life in the minds of the readers. The talent you have at your fingertips is so diverse it goes every where . I humbly ask is there any way to keep writeon going ? I know I am just an old grandma with no reason for you to care but these wonderful writers are ewilling to help you . I would help as well but I am not computer savy. This message is meant for the moderator if still monitoring...

Understanding that Amazon had decided the WriteOn forum did not garner enough users for them to continue, is there any way that they might consider moving the site in its entirety to the cloud or allow someone to move it to a private server? This would allow the users to continue to use the site, and would continue to provide Amazon Scout and Amazon KDP with authors (several of the writers here have gone on to both).

If there is a financial aspect, my husband and I do have careers in IT and have our own server equipment that could be utilized.

Interested in your feedback. If this is something we could petition to Amazon corporate, please let us know the correct person or department to direct our inquiries to.

Thank you,
Tracy Bradford

Thanks for giving us a reason for your decision to close WriteOn. It's also good of you to give us timely notice, so we can decide on an alternative site to migrate to. However, the rationale you gave is a bit vague.. can you be more specific how the site didn't live up to your plans and expectations?

It would've been great if you'd consulted with the community before making such a momentous decision unilaterally. A compromise could have been arrived at which would preserve this valuable and unique site, allowing it to continue providing a much-needed venue for literary interaction. Instead, we were hit with a cruel, arbitrary decision that has caused a great deal of pain an insecurity to members.

There is still time to reconsider and reverse your decision, even partially. As you're no doubt aware, this is a large and enthusiastic user base which would rejoice at your generous change of heart. The site could be monetized somehow, even with adverts, which would be a small price to pay for its continued existence. Take the pulse of the community and see how devoted we are to WriteOn, and how much it means to us!

I didn't use discuss that much. So if that is a burden - let it go.

But I really like WO's "Home page" and your "Profile account" features. People could work on their WIPs and they appear on the Home Page and move in ranks with the likes and activity - as it does now. And the comments and feedback that appears there on your profile and WIP.

There does seem to be a number of people who follow each other - Authors mainly. They need to make this a place for readers to come to and not feel intimidated. We are looking really for their input. They are the audience.

Lose - Discuss - cut down I-T support for that. Now WO is a much easier I-T support. And likely what you initially had in mind.

They can keep the writer prompts going - which are fun.

WO would not have to maintain the discuss forum. That could go.

But the "Home Page" and "Profiles" would be easy to maintain. (Please! I am begging. WO is fantastically set up. Plus what will happen to Kindle-Worlds? (not that I play there yet.)

There are a good deal of readers only. And I am sure they hate to see this "ALL" go. And they like to get the follow feeds from authors when they update WIPs. And that would grow if they did not see the non-sense that appears in discuss. It is a distraction.

So if WO could see its way to doing just that - that would be great. The I-T burden would be smaller by far. And really the trivial many problem of maintaining the shenanigans that appear in "Discuss" forums would be gone.

And they could leave the VITAL few --- Home Page, WIP and Profile follow-features, and "Create" & "Read" as is --- plus advertising to help cut the cost (why you don't do that now I am not sure). Advertise the books for sale on Amazon Kindle - KDP feeds - Kindle World activity.

There are still ways to keep WO viable for us writers to maintain a presence and a place for readers to gather and see what they like.

Here is hoping WO is listening.

For those of you who are questioning whether folks are moving anywhere, or whether any additional info is being shared among the members, please see Michael's post under "Ask and Ye Shall Receive." Here we are posting possible alternate sites, and discussing the benefits and detriments.

If sifting through all of those posts is too much, I'm trying to consolidate the information in a "book" I've posted that provides information on the petition we've started, any other relevant information, and a chapter that will give any decisions on where we go from here.

Okay all - for what it's worth, I sent the email below to the head man himself (assuming the email is valid). Thanks Soleil for the research, and all those who contributed to the ideas / suggestions outlined below.

*****************

Hi Jeff.
My name is Tracy, and I am one of many Amazon customers currently using the WriteOn platform that Amazon hosts. I am also one of many who are incredibly sad to have gotten the news that it's closing. Understanding fully that Amazon tries many projects to see what will work, and that the hope was that this project would attract more users than it did, we - those who use and love it - are wondering whether we can tempt you with a variety of ideas that we have on ways that we might keep our site while also providing Amazon with new and increased traffic and revenues.

OPTION 1) Keep WriteOn open and let the users market for you. By nature, authors these days have to be social-media present. That being said, letting the public at large know about WriteOn will spread the news and open the doors for more users to come on board. I myself am a member of a national organization and know several local chapters who were interested in looking into WriteOn just as the announcement of imminent closure came. With a lack of any real promotional notifications to the writing community at large about WriteOn from its inception, we think that with a time and effort investment we can utilize your current members to steer the site toward the traffic you were hoping for if given the chance.

OPTION 2) Keep WriteOn open but charge a membership fee as a means for the site to be solvent and a sales generator for Amazon as it grows.

OPTION 3) Relieve yourself of costs for support and development by allowing the users to support the site ourselves, either by moving the site into the cloud and open-sourcing the write-on code, or allowing the code to be moved to a private server where it could be managed independently. As an incentive for this, the site and/or members could advertise for Amazon, promote Scout and KDP, and continue to provide Amazon with new authors and readers, with no cost to you other than that already invested. We could keep the association of WriteOn to Amazon, or make it completely independent, whichever is more desirable for you.

Please know that there are several hundred users who have banded together in an attempt to keep our "community" intact. Rather than allow another site like Wattpad to benefit from this influx of members, we would much prefer to convince you of the benefit to Amazon we could be.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and to hear our thoughts. You should be proud to have built a community that is so sad to be losing something you've created, and who are so willing to stick with Amazon. We would, of course, be open to any other ideas or combination of options you might have.

Yours most sincerely,
Tracy - and the other writers and readers that make up your WriteOn community

Hi all.
Just wanted to share that we did get a response. :)

While parts of it seem like stock customer service response, there are definitely parts that appear to be more directly related to my query, so I am at least encouraged by that. It said, in part... "Jeff Bezos received your email, and I'm responding on his behalf. Thank you very much for taking the time to reach out and share your thoughts and feedback regarding the deprecation of the Write On Community platform." It goes on to say, "I've shared your e-mail with the Write On team for review."

The note also recommended I post our suggestions in the forums, which I've already done (see above). So now I suppose we can hope that they review them and perhaps give us an opportunity for further discussion. I'll let you know if I hear anything more.

The biggest suggestion is to keep any writing communities to invitation-only.

There shouldn't be any threads with advertisements for services on them unless they are officially sponsored by Amazon.

This just sucks. I thought this was the best idea for beginning writers. I'm very disappointed. It's not very cool of Amazon to not even give any explanation at all. At least with an explanation it may have been able to be remedied. I know it's not from lack of support because I see lots of support. I'm sorry to the beginning writers who have been able to gain the confidence to keep writing and the feedback to change or continue what they're doing. I really hope this doesn't discourage anyone to give up. Good luck to everyone and let's just hope there's somewhere these future fantastic writers can continue their work or that Amazon changes their minds.

Hello Melissa, I hope things are fine.

You're not alone. Many of us are saddened, outraged even, at Amazon's inconsiderate and unfair decision to close this site. Continuing to run it would hardly bankrupt them, and would've shown goodwill towards our writing community. They did give a vague 'explanation' which I asked them to elaborate on, but so far there's been no response. I think it's extremely unlikely they'll change their minds, but a petition's been made to convince them, and could do with more signatures:

https://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-writeon.html

We've also got a 'WriteOn Writers' page on Wattpad, which features Reading Lists and a selection of threads aimed specifically at WriteOn-ers. Please check it out when you can, you're welcome to join the growing roster of W/On followers:

Good luck to you, too, and best wishes for the future!

What the hell is your problem, Matthew? If you don't like it here, just go away. What's the sense in picking on everyone for every little thing you disagree with or think is lame ? You've done nothing but insult people every time you post in the forums here. One time even doing so to a suicidal thirteen-year-old, making everyone fear the worse because she didn't post for months afterward.

You have a serious problem.

Some of us actually care what happens to this place and the people here. Most of us are aware that the petition will likely lead nowhere, but at least we're standing up for something we believe in. Do you know how to do that or do you just ridicule everything in this world?

Out of everyone throwing the 'troll' word around here, you have been the only troll I've ever seen on this site.
